London City Hall or GLA , By Sir Norman Foster, Soth Bank, London, October 2003
(By Canon Powershot A70)
GLA : Great London Authority
The Building was named GLA but is named London City Hall now. It is designed as democratic building, by transparency and accessibility, that allows people to enter and see the official meeting of GLA by walking through the main ramp which embraces the main hall. N. Foster has already used this idea in Dome of Reichstag, the new German Parliament, in Berlin as well. Azita (my Wife who is doing her PhD in environment and energy issues) says that another significance of the building is minimum energy consumption.
I took this shot two years ago, few weeks before official opening of the hall.

Dear Reza,
This is a very interesting building. Different than any city hall I have seen before. What's interesting is the idea of the architecture of democracy and its transparency. Two thoughts come to my mind: 1. Can one assume that there is "transparency" in governmental decision-making, based on the outward representation of the space where the decision is being made? 2. (And this is something that I noticed before reading about the democratic design): This form of democracy remains quite phallic!
But it's a quite unusual and creative building.
By the way, have you read Giuliana Bruno's book, Atlas of Emotions? There is a very interesting section on the architecture of interior and another one on mapping and design. The book is more about film, but I like Bruno's writing style and gender analysis and her writing on fashioning space (she is kind of blind to race issues, I must say).
